Knee Arthroscopy

Knee Arthroscopy

Knee arthroscopy is a surgical technique of orthopedic surgery in which examination and treatment of the interior of the knee joint are performed with an arthroscope. In this process, a small fiber-optic camera also referred to as an arthroscope is used and the incisions are very small to enable visualization inside the knee joint. This enables the surgeon to not only see the cartilage, ligaments and other tissues inside the knee but also to reach them easily. Besides for diagnosing and examining a joint, arthroscopy can be applied for a number of corrective operations, for instance, to suture torn ligaments, to take out the damaged cartilage, or to wash out the joint. This method, otherwise, is considered less painful and the recovery time is comparatively shorter than the open surgeries.

Who needs Knee Arthroscopy?

1. Chronic Knee Pain:
Those who continue to experience knee pain that will not subside with the help of medication or even physical therapy will need arthroscopy for proper diagnosis and then the doctor can directly operate on the affected area or structure.

2. Swelling and Inflammation:
Those patients, who constantly have swelling and inflammation in the knee even with the help of nonsurgical procedures, might find arthroscopy helpful to find the source of the problem.

3. Joint Instability:
Any patient who has a feeling of the knee giving way or having a weak knee particularly with regard to performance of daily tasks may require arthroscopy to determine and treat the cause of instability.

4. Meniscus and Ligament Injuries:
Patients with tears on the menisci or other ligament issues, for instance, the ACL or PCL, may undergo arthroscopic surgery for repair or reconstruction of the damaged parts.

5. Cartilage Damage:
In cases where patients having worn out cartilage or ha osteoarthritis the surgeon may use arthroscopy to wash out and sometimes construct the joint.

Shoulder Arthroscopy

Shoulder Arthroscopy

Shoulder arthroscopy is a minimal invasive operative technique employed for the diagnosis and management of several joint related disorders concerning the shoulder. As a part of the surgery the arthroscope – a small camera with a light on the end is inserted into the shoulder with small cuts in the skin. It gives a clear picture of the internal framework of the shoulder mainly composed of muscles, blood vessels, tendons and cartilages. Looking at these recorded images, the surgeon can perform required work, for example, he can remove or suture the injured tissues, level the bone edges or treat rotator cuff injuries. There is usually less pain, lesser scar, and shorter hospital stay after shoulder arthroscopy than in the conventional open surgery. It is more frequently described in usage for conditions such as impingement syndrome and rotator cuff tear, shoulder instability and arthritis, among others.

Who needs Shoulder Arthroscopy?

1. Persistent Shoulder Pain : Patients who have constant shoulder pain which cannot be managed by medication, physical therapy or by avoiding certain types of movements will require shoulder arthroscopy for diagnosis and treatment.
2. Shoulder Instability : Patients with recurrent dislocations of the shoulder or an impression of instability of the joint because of the damage to the ligaments may require arthroscopy of the shoulder.
3. Rotator Cuff Tears : Patients with rotator cuff tear  partial or complete; whom causes patients to experience weakness coupled by limited shoulder movement and are likely to undergo arthroscopy to reassemble the torn tendons.
4. Impingement Syndrome : Some patients who may be having shoulder impingement where the rotator cuff tendons are squeezed when the arm is in motion may require arthroscopy to trim off inflamed tissue or bone spurs that cause the impingement.
5. Labral Tears : Some patients may have labral tears, and they are commonly seen in patients with shoulder injuries or dislocations; the cartilage might therefore need to be surgically repaired through arthroscopy so as to enhance the shoulder’s stability and functionality.
